INGREDIENT DEEP DIVE

Cacao Nibs (Theobroma cacao)
Ground, energise, nourish

A potent medicinal plant food, the Mayan people deeply respected Cacao as a food of the Gods. Cacao is considered a nutritive with trace minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and healthy fats and antioxidants. As an energetic support, Cacao is used in ceremony as a heart-opener, whilst also supporting sharpened focus. Cacao may ease tension and invite connection and awareness.
During the premenstrual phase, chocolate is a common craving, and naturopathically, we see this as a need for extra nutrients and support. The PMS phase is characterised by the slow and steady decline in hormones, which in other cycle phases usually bolster and buffer our energy and threshold for stress and stimuli. As hormone levels drop, fatigue, tension, aches and pains are common and cravings call in more nutrients for energy and relief.

Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris)
Act as a womb tonic, balance, support

Lady’s Mantle is a part of the Rose family, alongside her sister, Raspberry leaf. Like Raspberry Leaf, Lady’s Mantle is a womb tonic, and also draws on the energetic components of Rose — healing, subtle, feminine, the power of softness and sensitivity. Lady’s Mantle has traditionally been seen as a nervine, gently steadying and strengthening our nervous system, while also being anti-inflammatory and soothing any premenstrual aggravation. Lady’s Mantle in this phase prepares the way for a harmonious cycle to come, soothing premenstrual exacerbations and talking to the womb about harmony and balance before the bleed. Whichever way symptoms swing in polarity, Lady’s Mantle is a balancer, helping to support a healthy, rhythmic bleed.

Sage (Salvia officinalis)
Purify, warm, inspire clarity

Sage is part of the Lamiaceae plant family of warmth, alongside lavender, thyme, oregano and rosemary. Of the Lamiaceae, Sage is the defender; a potent antiseptic, antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial. Sage smoke has been used ceremonially to clear and purify places and spaces across cultures for much of history, bringing renewed energy and clearing out the old.
Sage is astringent and part of its medicinal work is drying up overflowing fluids, whether that is mucous, discharges, breastmilk, or hot or cold sweats. Sage is also a circulatory stimulant, invigorating fresh blood circulation, and used traditionally to enhance memory. The warmth in the oils cultivates a grounding and strong warm inner core that gives us renewed resilience.
In the premenstrual phase, we are drawing inward, and can be more sensitive to external stimuli. Sage is protective and protects our boundary, supports strength and resilience while also helping us to draw inward and cultivate our energy, without overflowing.
Medicinally Sage is protective in this time, offering warmth and support when we are more vulnerable.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Relax, encourage, inspire peace

Lavender is a part of the Lamiaceae family of warmth, alongside sage, thyme, oregano and rosemary among other beautiful herbs. If Sage is the Lamiaceae defender, Lavender is the peace bringer. Lavender has traditionally been used to bring perspective, ease tension, reduce stress and calm the body. Lavender brings support through ease and resilience, and helps to reduce anxiety.
There have been great studies for Lavender and pain relief that describe beautifully Lavender’s unique way of helping. People in pain that were given Lavender used less pain medication, had better sleep and generally felt better than the control group without Lavender, even though their pain scores remained similar. Lavender brings perspective, and allows you to be with what is more comfortably. To cushion intensity through relaxation.
Lavender has a special place in the premenstrual phase, allowing ease where there is discomfort, and perception where there is holding. Lavender, like Licorice, is an invitation into the yin of this phase, and to have a relaxing giggle along the way, feeling steady, calm and strong.

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Fortify, restore, soothe

Licorice has traditionally been seen as one of the great adaptogens and adrenal restorative herbs. Used for thousands of years in China for strength and longevity, Licorice is a restorative tonic for all types of stress imbalance or over extension, including adrenal fatigue, burn out, chronic stress and exhaustion.
Licorice is also a soothing demulcent. It coats, soothes and protects any tissue it reaches and is particularly helpful for respiratory inflammation, skin conditions, and gastrointestinal irritation. It is anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic and may support soothing coughs, muscle cramps and spasm.
Licorice is naturally very sweet. Glycyrrhizin one of it’s medicinal compounds brings a sweetness many times stronger than cane sugar to its roots. Like Cacao, Licorice brings a deeply nourishing version of a common premenstrual craving (in this case, sugar) so that both the taste and the deeper calling of the craving are met. Licorice brings sweetness to the PMS blend and to Cacao’s side, providing sustainable nourishment that works to fill up underlying depletion and fatigue.
